Our Story |
June 2010 marked the date when two crazy “kids” got the idea to take a 30K+ square foot building located in the downtown district of Meyersdale and turn it into a restaurant, pub, events facility and hotel. With the help of family, friends, and the best damn construction crew limited funds could buy; and a huge amount of ambition....the project began.
Now in order to understand the true vision for Morguen Toole, its important to understand a bit of the history of what once was housed in this mammoth four-story structure. Erected in late 1800’s, the building was home for many years to Baer & Company Hardware and R. Reich Furniture and Mortuary. Both businesses thrived until the mid 1900’s, but felt the effect of economic and social changes occurring over time. In the 1960’s, a local businessman purchased both buildings, broke holes thru the common center wall and converted the structure into one facility that housed a large furniture store with open hours from Monday to Saturday, and was home to worship services every Sunday. The store remained open for several years but fell on tough times. It was later sold to a local family. The business enjoyed success in the facility, and were staples to the downtown district for many years. Time has a way of catching us all, and after 40 years the building once again changed ownership. Anxious to ride on the successes of businesses past, a new business moved into the space around 2006 but was unable to sustain a solid foothold and thus abandoned the facility after only a few short years. Years of vacancy, limited upkeep, code issues, and a struggling downtown district hampered the efforts to fill the space with a new tenant until June 2010 when Morguen Toole Company owners, Jeremy & Andrea Hoover in conjunction with Castletrax Rentals owners, Melanie and Jerry Hoover envisioned a rebirth of the Meyersdale community. Having listened to stories about crowded streets, neighbors sharing stories, and a community that enjoyed great food, great entertainment and fellowship, the foursome purchased the property located at 130 Center Street and immediately began efforts to revive the large brick structure. Adding great hope to bring new business, and new travelers to the area. Eleven months later, against insurmountable odds, Morguen Toole Company opened its doors for business, marking Memorial Day weekend 2011 as the anniversary for what is considered by the town as “Meyersdale’s Homecoming.” The correlation of the business’s opening date and ability to provide an enjoyable “home” for such a traditional and celebrated local event, felt appropriate; the common theme that runs deep through the vessels of what makes Morguen Toole a welcoming and entertaining place is “to come home...” no matter where your home may be!
